OsMADS51 is flowering avtivator in rice.

OsMADS51, also konwn as OsMADS65, is type I MADS-box gene in short-day promotion pathway in rice. OsMADS51 encodes a protein which is composed 164 amino acids and contains an SRF-like MADS domain.[1] [3]And the K-box region of OsMADS51 protein is not conserved and C-terminal region is short.[1] It function as an SD(short-day)-dependent flowering activator. Under the short-day condition, OsMADS51 can largely promote the fowering time. And under long days, OsMADS51 slightly promote the flowering time.[1]OsMADS51 acts upstream of Ehd1 and downstream of OsGI. And under short days, OsMADS51 transmit a flowering signal through Ehd1, and Ehd1 then turn on expression of OsMADS14 and Hd3a.[1] [4][3] OsMADS51 takes part in a similar process under the long days condition. And the amount of these activators under long days is quite low. So these activators probably is not suffcient under long days.[1]

Expression

Phenotype UbiTOsMADS51 transgenic plants (OX) and their segregating wildtype controls (WT) cultivated for 62 d under SD conditions.[1]).

Expression is ubiquitous in all organs..[1]

OsMADS51 is a unique gene in rice genome; there is no homologous gene existing in Arabidopsis. But a homologous gene with 74% identity exists in wheat and maize.[1] Putative orthologues: wheat TaAGL-33 and TaAGL-42, brachypodium Bradi2g59190 and Bradi2g59120 and maize ZmB4FML1..[2]

There is two independent T-DNA insertional mutant alleles, osmads51-1 and osmads51-2. in which T-DNA are inserted into the first intron in both alleles, at 9606 and 15927 bp from the start codon in osmads51-1 and osmads51-2.[1]

Knowledge Extension

In rice, there is two short-day promotion pathways: one mediated by Hd1 and the other by Ehd1. Both these two pathway can induce Hd3a, transport Hd3a product protein to the shoot apical meristem to induce flowering. HvOS1 and HvOS2 are related to Type I MADSbox genes and exhibit differential expression in particular seed developmental stages in a cultivar-specific manner.
