Gene Symbol
- Os11g0267000 <=> OsRDR6,OsSHL2,RDR6,SHL2
Function
- The rice OsRDR6 acts in the biogenesis of various types and sizes of small RNAs.
- OsRDR6-dependent tasiR-ARFs play key roles in lemma development in rice.
- OsRDR6 is required for the biogenesis of 24-nt phased small RNAs.
- OsRDR6-dependent 24-nt phased small RNAs are independent of the RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathway.
- OsRDR6 mediates secondary small RNA biogenesis in rice.
- The researchers identified a spontaneous rice mutant with pleiotropic spikelet defects, with most spikelets showing needle-shaped, awn-like lemma; this phenotype is similar to that of shl2-rol and osdcl4-1 mutants (Liu et al., 2007; Nogueira et al., 2007; Toriba et al., 2010).
- Unlike the con- sistent spikelet defects in shl2-rol and osdcl4-1, the osrdr6-1 mutants showed various degrees of spikelet defects under different natural growth conditions.
- The spikelet defects and altered stamen number of the mutant only occurred at high temperatures and under long-day conditions, as found in July in Hangzhou. Mutant plants were normal when grown in low temperatures and short-day conditions, as found in October at the same location .
- The developmental defects of osrdr6-1 were rescued by a construct containing the full-length OsRDR6 genomic DNA; the transgenic plants ap- peared morphologically identical to wild-type Zhonghua11 (Figure 1b), confirming that the OsRDR6 locus is responsible for the mutant phenotype.
