Brief Introduction

Figure 1. The role of Sucrose synthase
  • Sucrose synthase, encoded by a small multigene family, has been regared as a key enzyme involved in energy metabolism of plants which can catalyse the reversible conversion of sucrose and UDP to UDP-glucose and fructose[1][2][3][4][5].
  • The study of sus gene family has been carried out in several plant species. So far, six sus gene members in Arabidopsis[2], seven in Populus[3], seven in cotton[4] and five in Saccharum[5] have been identified.
  • The previous study by Hirose et al. showed that there were six sus genes in Oryza sativa Japonica Group[1], namely Os03g0401300, Os06g0194900, Os07g0616800, Os03g0340500, Os04g0309600 and Os02g0831500. Recently, three new sus genes ( Os04g0249500, Os02g0184400 and Os08g0301500 ) were identified in Oryza sativa Japonica Group through NCBI BLASTP, HMM model and InterPro.

  • Sucrose synthase have specific functions in regulating carbon sotrage and metabolic structure of plant cell. During plants development, sus is very important for cellulose deposition and cell wall formation and they can transport sucrose across the tonoplast from the vacuole to the cytosol in sucrose-storing organs. In addition, Sus is also considered to be associated with responses to biotic and abiotic stresses and nitrogen fixation as well as arbuscule maturation and maintenance in mycorrhizal roots of legumes[2][3][4][5].
