Brief Introduction
- SBP-box gene family belongs to plant-specific zinc finger transcription factor which was first identified in Antirrhinum majus for their interaction with the promoter sequence of the floral meristem identity gene SQUAMOSA [1][2][3][4][5][6]. SBP-box genes encode proteins sharing a conserved DNA-binding domain of 70 ~ 80 amino acid residues, with a novel zinc finger motif that contains two zinc-binding sites. It also has a nuclear localization signal (NLS) at its C-terminus[3][4][5][6].

- As no SBP-box gene has been found in animals to this day, it was suggested that SPL genes might appear after the divergenece of plants and animals[6].
- As an ubiquitous TF in higher plants, SBP-box genes play important roles in plant growth and flower development. It has been reported that AtSPL8 in Arabidopsis can affect pollen sac development[3][7] and SPL14 can conferring resistance to the programmed cell death (PCD)-inducing fungal toxin fumonisin B1 (FB1)[4][8].
