Annotated Information

Gene Symbol

  • Os12g0207000 <=> OsMADS13

Function

  • The MADS-box family members, identified initially as floral homeotic genes, are one of the most extensively studied transcription factor genes in plants.
  • MADS-box genes have a variety of functions. In animals, MADS-box genes are involved in muscle development and cell proliferation and differentiation. Functions in fungi range from pheromone response to arginine metabolism.
  • MADS-box transcription factors, besides being involved in floral organ specification, have also been implicated in several aspects of plant growth and development.[1] [2] [3]

Evolution

  • The MADS domain binds to DNA sequences of high similarity to the motif CC[A/T]6GG termed the CArG-box.
  • The MADS-box family has been divided into two main groups. The type I consists of ARG80/SRF-like genes of animals and fungi, also designated as M-type genes in plants, and type II contains MEF2-like genes of animals and yeast as well as MIKC-type genes of plants.
  • It is proposed that an ancestral duplication before the divergence of plants and animals gave rise to these groups
  • The length of the MADS-box reported by various researchers varies somewhat, but typical lengths are in the range of 168 to 180 base pairs, i.e. the encoded MADS domain has a length of 56 to 60 amino acids.
  • MADS-box genes seem to have evolved mainly through gene duplication events followed by neofunctionalization, subfunctionalization or in some cases pseudogenization of the duplicated gene.
  • However, redundancy being one of the fates of duplication is also common in MADS-box family.[1] [2] [3]
