The rice gene Os04g0611800 was reported as osks1 in 2004[1] by researchers from Japan.

Annotated Information

Gene Symbol

  • Os04g0611800 <=> OsKS1, KS1, KS1A, KSL1, OsKSL1, OsKS1A, OsKS1B, OsKS1C, Ks1, Os KS1, OsTPS26

Function

  • OsKS1 encodes KS protein which is the major enzymes involved in the early steps of GA biosynthesis.
  • Although several CPS-like and KS-like genes were identified in rice, GA biosynthesis depends on only OsCPS1 and OsKS1.

Expression

  • OsKS1 was broadly expressed in all the organs of wild-type rice that the researchers tested, including vegetative shoot apices, leaf sheaths, leaf blades, elongating stems, roots, immature panicles, and panicles at flowering time, whereas the levels of OsKS1 in roots was lower than those in other organs.

Evolution

Figure 3. GA metabolic Cyt P450-dependent monooxygenases KO and KAO [1].
  • OsKS1 showed highest similarity to Arabidopsis AtKS/GA2 (43% identity), whereas the other OsKS proteins showed between 37% and 41% identities with the Arabidopsis protein. OsKS1-4 and OsKS7 were more closely related to maize (Zea mays) ZmKS (49%–54% identities), whereas OsKS5, OsKS6, and OsKS8 constituted another group (39%–43% identities with ZmKS; Fig. 3).
